Observatoire volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise
21 July 2006

After 4 months of surface deformation and increased seismic activity, an
seismic crisis started on July 20 at 0218 local time. At 0400 eruption
tremor appeared first at Bory seismic station. A first fissure oppened
between 2380 and 2250 m altitude on the sout-west flank of Piton de la
Fournaise. A lava flow went down east of "crater Rivals". At 0540 a
second 50 m long fissure opened at 2150 m altitude on the south flank
between "Rivals" and "Château Fort" producing a 2 km long
lava flow
untill crater "Jéremine". Tremor activity strongly decreased but is
almost stable at a low intensity since 21 July 1500.
