************************************************************ Two meetings in Chile (early 2007) concerning arc volcanism ************************************************************ From: Michael Dungan <Michael.Dungan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Two independent meetings with different agendas and different sponsoring societies will be held in Chile in early 2007. Their ?back-to-back? timing may permit some people to participate in both of these for the price of one airfare, but interested participants must follow the separate application guidelines. (1) The 2007 SOTA meeting (State of the Arc), which is sponsored by IAVCEI (Arcs Commission), will be held at Termas Puyehue, Chile from January 28 to February 2 (abstract deadline, September 15, 2006; registration deadline, October 15, 2006; maximum number of participants = 90). The scientific program will consist of four and a half days of oral presentations, posters, and discussions. This program will be punctuated by a mid-week, half-day field excursion. Posters (majority of contributions) will be displayed for three or five days depending on available space and the number of participants. Speakers will be selected in November, 2006 by the Program Committee from the body of abstracts submitted to the meeting. The program will be organized to a large degree around the list of 16 Questions identified by the Program Committee as some of the key issues which must be addressed before we will be able to achieve the significantly more predictive and quantitative understanding of arc magmatism that we all seek. <http://www.iavcei-arcs.org.uk/>http://www.iavcei-arcs.org.uk/ (2) Geological Society of America Field Forum Assessing the state of our knowledge of continental arc volcanism: the Tatara-San Pedro complex, 36ES Chilean Southern Volcanic Zone (3-13 February, 2007). The official announcement of this Field Forum appears in the June issue of GSA Today. <http://www.gsajournals.org/gsaonline/?request=get-document&doi=10.1130%2F1052-5173%282006%29016%5B0060%3AFFATSO%5D2.0.CO%3B2>http://www.gsajournals.org/gsaonline/?request=get-document&doi=10.1130%2F1052-5173%282006%29016%5B0060%3AFFATSO%5D2.0.CO%3B2 Description and Objectives. The purpose of this Field Forum is to evaluate our understanding of magma evolution and transport at long-lived continental arc systems and how such insights can be integrated with the resolution obtained from real-time observations of active systems. This forum will assemble a group of participants with the experience sufficient to articulate the state of our knowledge with regard to arc volcanism, identify outstanding problems, and propose concrete solutions for filling existing gaps. The spectacularly exposed Quaternary Tatara-San Pedro complex (TSPC) will serve to bring these issues into focus during a five-day field excursion. Papers (syntheses, reviews, and new results) contributed by participants on these topics will be published as a monograph. Outline of the Forum. Two half-days of helicopter-assisted ridge-hopping will provide an overview of the volcanic system (intrusive roots to late Holocene flows and sector-collapse debris avalanches), and 2.5 days will be spent on the ground examining well-studied lavas and xenoliths. Logistical constraints limit participation to 36 people, including organizers. Pre-excursion presentations will combine preparation for the excursion, exposés of other arc volcanic centers, and debates on the underlying issues. A post-excursion discussion, catalyzed by confronting the geology and petrology of the TSPC, will be organized to address relevant issues pertaining to how such edifices can be efficiently studied, plus where and how current paradigms concerning arc magmatism can be tested. ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
