El Chichón Volcano: Twenty five years later
San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, México
March 20-25, 2007

On March 28, 1982 a powerful explosion culminated
months of uncertainty and apprehension for the
inhabitants of the region in the neighborhood of
El Chichón, an inconspicuous volcano in the
southern Mexican State of Chiapas. The ensuing
7-day eruption resulted in two thousand deaths,
disruption of human activities in the area, and a
significant impact on the atmosphere. This brief
but violent eruption was accompanied by a
sulfur-rich trachyandesitic magma that contained
anhydrite as a primary mineral. The eruptive
column injected aerosols that had a global impact
on the atmosphere. The 1982 explosive behavior of
El Chichón is also noteworthy for the complex
generation of alternating magmatic-hydromagmatic
eruptions that destroyed approximately 100 km2 of forest.

The main purpose of this international conference
is to commemorate the event with the aim of
reassessing our knowledge on the eruption and
also to review the status of our science,
particularly with respect to explosive eruptions,
their characteristics, impacts and consequences.
The conference is organized by UNAM (Universidad
Nacional Autónoma de México) and Universidad de
Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas (UNICACH) and is sponsored by IAVCEI.

The conference will consist of invited lectures
by well-known specialists in different aspects of
explosive volcanism and its impacts, and related
contributed presentations. In particular we encourage contributions on:

1) Interrelated magmatic and hydromagmatic eruptions
2) Stratigraphy and eruptive mechanisms
3) Sulfur and aerosol emissions
4) Chemistry and petrology of sulfur-rich magmas
5) Volcano seismology
6) Volcano monitoring
7) Social impacts of volcanism
8) Risk assessment
