Volcano-Seismologist - Vacant position at the Seismic Research Unit
********************************************************************
From: Richard Robertson <richie_robertson@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

The Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies, St.
Augustine, Trinidad now has an opening for the post of Research Fellow
(Volcano-Seismologist).

The main function of the Seismic Research Unit is to monitor seismic and
volcanic activity in the English-speaking Caribbean and to provide accurate
and timely advice to the governments of the region on all matters relating
to these subjects. Persons interested in this post are strongly advised to
visit our website at http://www.uwiseismic.com to learn more about the
seismic and volcanic activity in the Lesser Antilles and the operations of
the Unit

Duties and job responsibilities
1.The successful applicant will play a leading role in the monitoring and
interpretation of seismicity and seismic activity associated with volcanism
in the Lesser Antilles.
2. Prepare and update seismic hazard assessments for the Eastern Caribbean.
This is an ongoing task.
3. Outreach activities: An important component of the job is involvement in
public education (outreach) activities. These include: providing guided
tours of the Unit to school groups; giving regular public lectures on
various aspects of seismology in the Lesser Antilles and assisting the
Unit's Education and Outreach Office by providing information for the
website and for printed outreach material.
4. Assist with the day to day running of the Unit. This involves responding
to real or perceived threat of seismic and volcanic activity in any of the
islands monitored by the unit (and generally entails liaising with
government officials, the media and the public at the request of the Head of
the Unit), assisting with the monitoring program, assisting with consultancy
work done by the Unit, and generally using their professional skills to
enhance the Unit's ability to successfully mitigate seismic and volcanic
activity in the Caribbean.
5. Research related to seismicity in the region. To develop a research
program, in collaboration with other staff members, using data collected by
the network and related data. The nature of this research will depend on
the individual's research background and experience, but its overall aim
will be to improve our understanding of volcanic processes in the Lesser
Antilles.
6. Other activities such as teaching and general participation in University
life.

The position will involve a large field work component, and applicants
should be fit and in good health. Good communication skills are necessary,
of particular importance is the ability to communicate science to
non-scientists. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant aspect of
volcanology and preferably some prior work experience in a similar
institute. A good command of English is absolutely essential.
Applicants should have a good degree in an earth science or relevant
physical science subject and hold a postgraduate qualification such as an
MSc or PhD in a relevant aspect of Seismology. Candidates should preferably
have experience in the operation of modern telemetred seismograph networks
and in seismic and other techniques for monitoring active volcanoes. Prior
work experience in a similar institute would be considered an asset.
Knowledge of computer programming and software development would be highly
beneficial. Experience with Earthworm, Seisan and MiniSeed and programming
in C and C++, will be particularly advantageous.

Further information and requirements
The position will be filled at the level of Junior Research Fellow/Research
Fellow. For appointment at the level of Research Fellow a Ph.D. in a
relevant area of study (Seismology/Geophysics) is required. Candidates for
the posts of who do not have a Ph.D. are eligible for appointment at the
level of Junior Research Fellow but will be expected to pursue an active
research programme leading towards the award of this degree.

Method of application
Detailed applications (two copies) should be sent to the Campus Registrar,
