Girina <girina@xxxxxxxxx> Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanic Activity INFORMATION RELEASE 22-06 Wednesday, May 10, 2006, 10:40 KDT (21:40 UTC on May 09) BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO: 55o58'N, 160o36'E; Elevation 2,895 m CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: ORANGE PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: RED Seismic activity returned to background levels from 12:00 UTC on May 09. Small fumarolic plumes were observing in the early morning of May 10. Probably a lava flow began to effuse at the lava dome. A danger for aviation in the area of the volcano exists. The large explosive eruption of Bezymianny volcano occurred from 08:21 till 08:45 UTC on May 09. An ash column rose up to 15 km (49,200 ft) ASL. Co-ignimbrite ash cloud was about 40 km (25 mi) in diameter on this height. Ash plumes extended to main direction to the north-east from the volcano.
