Workshop on ?Merapi and Merapi Type Volcanoes in The World with Their
Phenomena?

Organized by :

Background

Merapi volcano in Central Java belongs to the most active volcanoes in the
world. It is located at the very active subduction zone between the
Eurasian and the Indo-Australian Plates. Dominant magmatic mechanism is
explosive andesitic. Like many other Indonesian volcanoes, Merapi flanks
are also home for densely populations in Central Java. From historical
eruptions reports, 32 out of 67 typical pyroclastic flows have been took
place. Even small volcanic events, such as 1994 eruption, are a permanent
danger to life for the people at the flank of the volcano. A paroxysmal
eruption would immediately endanger more than one million of inhabitants
in the region around Yogyakarta, about 35 km south of the summit. Another
potential danger are mudflows (lahar) that occur during the rainy session
and may reach distances up to 20 km. Due to these reasons Merapi has been
classified as a high-risk volcano and was included into the list of 15
Decade Volcanoes be International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry
of the Earth?s Interior (IAVCEI).

The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (previously the
Volcanological Survey of Indonesia, VSI) in cooperation with many other
institutions in the world, have initiated interdisciplinary monitoring and
research programs have been initiated for more than several decades, and
featured a considerable enhancement of the observation capabilities which
are essentiial in order to cope with socio-economic impacts and reducing
its catastrophic consequences. The most recent investigations carried out
on Merapi to study the 3D velocity structure in the crust and the mantle
wedge above the down going slab beneath Central Java has shown striking
seismic anomalies that may play an important role in feeding Merapi
volcano.

Socio-cultural aspects on Merapi volcano are among other interesting
topics that could be presented to more understand of Merapi behaviour, as
well as for other volcanoes.

There are many other volcanoes in the world producing dangerously
pyroclastic flows such as Merapi type with the same permanent dangers to
the densely population. Investigations on those volcanoes are also
undergoing fastly.

It is our responsibility as a scientific community to contribute our
knowledge for the people of these regions to enhance the preparedness and
awareness of the people to facing such a kind of earth dynamic processes
and their impact to the lives of human being.

After postponed once, the workshop is finally launched as a continuation
of the two previously workshop of Merapi held in 1995 and 1998, with a
broader perspective including other Merapi type characteristics, history
and hazard mitigation, and subduction zone aspects related to the
volcano-tectonic recent activity in Indonesia region.

Within the above framework, a workshop, a called ?Merapi and Merapi Type
Volcanoes in The World with Their Phenomena? will be held by the Center of
Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM), Geological Agency,
Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (DEMR) on (4-6) September 2006,
in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Merapi Workshop will be ran together with the ?Volcano International
Gathering 2006? (VIG 2006) held also by Universitas Pembangunan Nasional
(UPN) Yogyakarta at the same time as a joint conference. Based on
volcanological and socio-cultural aspects of Merapi, scientific sessions
of Merapi Workshop 2006 and VIG 2006 will be run parallel at September 5-6
 2006.

Some of the questions that we hope to address in this workshop are:

   1. Which structural factors and processes have the greatest effects on
magma emplacement and eruption, and volcano-tectonic collapse,
   2. Could such structural factors and processes have repeatedly in the
future
   3. How do we can improve our knowledge of the internal structures and
mechanical behaviour of active volcano

Subjects

- any investigation of volcanic structures, processes and
mechanism of volcano and tectonic earthquakes, detection of seismicity and
regional stress field, seismic tomography of the subduction zone,

- methods for observation, analysis, and interpretation of
multiparameter data for a consistent model of the geological and dynamic
processes beneath the very active volcanoes in the region,

- tectonic-volcanic caldera collapse, and earthquakes generating
tsunami,

- hazards assessment for an area with very high population
density, and visualization of the transport processes of magma to clarify
how the high risk volcanoes is involved into the subduction processes (eg:
Merapi, Talang, Krakatau, Guntur, Marapai, Semeru, and Kelud)

The workshop includes, but is not restricted to, the following topics:
- relation between volcanism and regional tectonic,
- characteristics and mechanism of caldera collapse, resurgence,
and unrest
- dynamic of formation magma chamber
- physical properties of volcanic magma

Location & Date

The symposium will be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, September 4 - 6, 2006.

Following the conference, four field trips will be organized to visit
Merapi Summit, Merapi flank and Borobudur, Dieng Volcano Complex, and
Bromo Caldera.

Language

All presentation and discussion during the workshop should be in English

contributions. Submitted abstracts at the preiviously postponed Merapi
Workshop (2003) should be confirmed as soon as possible to Organizing
Committee..
