********************************************************************* 2006 IAVCEI International Conference on Continental Volcanism Guangzhou, China: 14th-18th May 2006 Session Announcement: From source to surface: processes and time scales of magma generation, extraction and ascent ********************************************************************* From: David Peate <david-peate@xxxxxxxxx> Dear colleagues: I would like to invite you to contribute to a session on "From source to surface: processes and time scales of magma generation, extraction and ascent" to be held during the 2006 IAVCEI International Conference on Continental Volcanism, at the White Swan Hotel, Guangzhou, China: 14th-18th May 2006. This session will focus on recent advances made in our understanding of three related topics: 1. The processes by which melt is generated and extracted from both mantle and crustal source rocks; 2. How this melt is subsequently transported to higher levels, and the processes that modify melt compositions in conduits and magma chambers; and 3. Constraints on the rates and time scales of these magmatic processes. We welcome contributions for this session from a diversity of disciplines (e.g., igneous and metamorphic petrology, experimental petrology, field-based observations, geochemistry) that address these broad themes. Confirmed speakers: Ken Sims (WHOI, USA), Jon Blundy (Bristol, UK), Georg Zellmer (Academia Sinica, Taiwan, R.O.C.). The deadline for submitting abstracts to the IAVCEI 2006 meeting is January 15. The deadline for the early registration is Jan 30. Details of the conference and field trips may be found at http://www.iavcei2006.org where abstract format/submission/registration instructions can also be found. David W.
