[VLAN] VLAN Newbie

Lot of stuff in the internet regarding VLANs.

My feeling: It is a technique by which a Physical LAN can be segmented into
multiple virtual lans. The 802.1Q standard implements VLANs by adding a TAG
in the ethernet frame. The VLANs are configured in the VLAN capable ethernet
switches. The client machines participating in the network may not know,
that they are participating in a virtual lan. So the frames reaching them do
not contain the tag - the tag is filtered by the switches. That means, in
most cases, the tagged frames can be seen only in the TRUNK links. The
switches in the network exchange VLAN configuration using GVRP protocol, so
the configuration can be dynamic. We can make a machine participating in the
network, VLAN aware, so that, it can participate in multiple virtual lans.
That is the main feature of LinuxVLAN package.
