Set "Setup/DVB/Display subtitles" to "no". When you want them to be displayed automatically again, set it back to "yes". You could add to you VDR start script that in setup.conf the line DisplaySubtitles = 0 is changed to DisplaySubtitles = 1 before starting VDR. You don't actually need to change that line, just appending DisplaySubtitles = 1 to setup.conf will do.
