No it's not possible because SPDIF has rather limited bandwidth. It was
designed for 48 kHz 16 (up to 20) bit stereo PCM originally.
The situation with Nvidia HDMI audio is perhaps improving, by Googling I

Perhaps it's soon time to search for a passive cooled G210 or GT220
card!
Sorry, then I don't understand your problem. I have absolutly no
problems with my Zotac ION Mainboard and HDMI Audio output.
I am using PCM Stereo output and when I have DD sound then I am using
AC3/DTS PassThrough over HDMI.
