[OT] Connecting a TSOP 1838 IR receiver to a SIR (IrDA) motherboard connector (ML6000)

Hi,

I can't find anything useful on Google, except for this (I can't
understand) :
http://forum.moddingplanet.it/archive/index.php?t-23650-p-2.html
(search for IRRX of IRTX, at the bottom of the page).

Basically, the question is : can I connect a standard customer IR
receiver chip (like a TSOP 1838, as LIRC documents
http://www.lirc.org/receivers.html) to a SIR connector on the motherboard ?

The Via EPIA ML motherboard SIR connector have :
* +5v
* key
* IRRX
* GND
* IRTX
The IR receiver chips have :
* +5v
* GND
* output

Is it possible to connect the output of the chip directly to the IRRX
pin of the motherboard, configure the BIOS to use this connector, train
LIRC using standard serial driver or SIR driver, and just have it working ?
The idea is to avoid voltage regulator, resistor, diode, etc. That's
only a few parts, but a single TSOP with direct wiring would be even
more simpler.

TIA
