lirc

I?m trying to use vdr with lirc.
lircd runs fine, I can test it with irw, but when I start vdr with 
--lirc=/dev/lirc, I get ERROR: /dev/lirc Connection refused.
/dev/lirc exists, with cat /dev/lirc I see reactions to the remote.
What can I do?
