Actually, I've got 

softdevice -ao alsa:pcm=plug:spdif#ac3=plug:spdif# -vo dfb:

here. Works like a charm. PCM and AC3 get routed through the SPDIF out to
my DD receiver. 

Whatever ALSA devices you use should be mentioned by `aplay -L` :-)
