Just wanted to chime in here with the suggestion to use a program called 'buffer' which does just this - limits the amount of data per second that will be passed unchanged from its stdin to stdout :) It's in Debian as package name 'buffer' and you'll be able to download the unpatched source code from http://packages.debian.org/buffer Cheers, Gavin.
