Right now the latest released is 1.9.0 (released 23-Jul-2009), while
on my system (Ubuntu) I have 1.8.8.git.2009.06.03-1ubuntu6.
I'm also on Ubuntu's kernel 2.6.31-17-generic.

The most recent stable release of Parted that I am aware of is parted-2.1 on Dec. 20, 2009.

From following the mailing list I understand that much work has been done in the version 2 series of parted to support disk devices with sector sizes larger than 512 bytes.
