Karel, thanks for your valuable hints.

For the record, what version of parted are you referring to?

Right now the latest released is  1.9.0 (released 23-Jul-2009), while
on my system (Ubuntu) I have 1.8.8.git.2009.06.03-1ubuntu6.
I'm also on Ubuntu's kernel 2.6.31-17-generic.

I hope I won't have to recompile too much stuff...
