when i say "extend" i dont necessarily mean "do more things".  as Marco seemed 
to indicate in this thread, rtcwake is doing more than he would like, so 
"extend" here would probably be along the lines of additional options to tell 
rtcwake to do even less work.  this way it can be combined with other packages 
at runtime (like pm-utils).  i'm certainly happy with the current behavior, 
but i'm not using pm-utils ;).

indeed ... i'm not famil with pm-utils, but Marco should be able to suggest 
some good starting points.
