Light Wind Aids Fire Fighting Efforts

Saturday’s weather continued with warm temperatures, light winds, low humidity, and active fire behavior. Interior pockets of unburned fuel remain inside the perimeter and were observed creating afternoon smoke columns. The containment percentage changed by the end of the day indicative of firefighter’s progress.

The northern portions of the fire remained active. However, work by firefighters continued to restrict the fire’s spread. Bull dozers and mastication aided in widening contingency fire breaks along both Winter and House Rock Roads. Other portions of the fire were in patrol, improve, and mop up status while fire fighters watched for spot fires outside the perimeter.

Today’s weather forecast continues warm and dry. Firefighters will continue to hold and secure fire lines and anchor points around various portions of the fire while exercising continuous vigilance for spot fires. Preparations are in place if the fire continues east towards House Rock Valley.

Closures: Highway 89A is closed from Mile Post 545 near the Cliff Dwellings to Fredonia. Businesses remain open in Marble Canyon and Vermillion Cliffs. Highway 67 from Jacob Lake to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is also closed. Due to the road closures, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park is presently inaccessible. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park remains open. The U.S. Forest Service has closed the North Kaibab Ranger District. The Bureau of Land Management has also closed its lands east of Fredonia, both closures are for public safety.
