Fire managers plan to begin ignitions on Moquitch FREDONIA, Ariz., June 17, 2019 — Fire managers for the North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest plan
to initiate the Moquitch-1 and Moquitch-3 (Phase 2) prescribed burn units as early as Wednesday if weather, resources, and fuel moisture conditions remain favorable to assure firefighter and visitor safety, while still achieving the desired objectives outlined
during the planning process. As fuel moisture levels fall within prescriptive parameters, firefighters will focus on treating approximately 3,500 acres between the two prescribed burn units. Boundaries and acreage are as follows: Moquitch 1 Prescribed Fire: The unit is located about 3 miles south by southwest of Jacob Lake and is approximately
2,104 acres in size. Boundaries for this unit will include dozer line to tie into FR260 and FR262C on the north, FR212 on the south, FR640 on the east, and FR642 on the west. Moquitch 3 (Phase 2) Prescribed Fire: The unit is located about 5.5 miles south of Jacob Lake and is approximately 1,440
acres in size. Boundaries for this unit will include FR212 on the north, FR259 on the south, FR259 on the east, and FR462 on the west. Additional details are as follows: Fuels: Both prescribed burn units consist of vegetation that is predominantly ponderosa pine with scattered clumps of
aspen and patches of New Mexico locust. Objectives: Reduce accumulations of hazardous fuels within the unit boundaries. Weather: Low relative humidity and increasing wind speeds are forecasted on Thursday and Friday. In which case, fire
managers plan to have a workforce on site to monitor and hold ignitions on those days and resume ignitions on Saturday and Sunday, if high wind activity subsides. Smoke: Smoke impacts may include Jacob Lake, AZ Highway 67, AZ Highway 89A and forest roads directly along the burn
unit boundary (see map for details). Safety: Community members and visitors may see fire personnel and vehicles in the vicinity during fire operations. Motorists
are cautioned that smoke may be present in short durations, which may impact roads and populated areas. Motorists are reminded to use caution, drive slowly, turn on headlights, and avoid stopping in areas where fire personnel is working. Smoke may also be
present and may result in short-duration impacts on populated areas. For more information on local air quality resources, please visit
