Prescribed burns planned for next week

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Sept. 21, 2018, For Immediate Release — Coconino National Forest firefighters are planning on taking advantage of a window of opportunity as the weather conditions are forecasted to be favorable next week to start multiple prescribed burn operations.

 

Next week’s prescribed burns will target up to 1,800 acres on the Flagstaff Ranger District and the first 5,000 acres of the Cragin Watershed Protection Project on the Mogollon Rim Ranger District. These prescribed fires are a part of the five year plan to reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health on the Coconino National Forest.

 

FLAGSTAFF RANGER DISTRICT.

Horseshoe – Kendrick 8

When: Planned ignitions Sept. 26 (Wednesday) at approximately 9 a.m.
Where: Seventeen miles northwest of Flagstaff, west of U.S. Highway 180.

Size: Approximately 862 Acres.
Smoke Impacts: Smoke may be seen and could impact areas north/northeast of Kendrick Park during the day and will be visible from U.S. Highways 180 and 89. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle in Kendrick Park and lower ranch areas of the White Horse Hills. Smoke will settle overnight, but should dissipate by early the next afternoon.

 

Walker Hill – Peaks 12

When: Planned ignitions will be Sept. 27 (Thursday) starting after 6 p.m.

Where:  Fifteen miles north of Flagstaff, east of U.S. Highway 180. (35.394171N, -111.732329W)

Size: Approximately 892 acres.
Smoke Impacts: Smoke will be seen southeast of Kendrick Park and north of the San Francisco Peaks, U.S. Highway 180 and 89. With prevailing southwest winds smoke could impact U.S. Highway 89. Early morning cool temperatures may cause smoke to settle in low lying areas.

 

MOGOLLON RIM RANGER DISTRICT.

Cragin Watershed Protection Project – Northeast

When: Planned ignitions Sept. 24 through 28 (Monday to Friday) at approximately 9 a.m.
Where: Four miles southeast of Clints Well, south of state Route 87. (
34.546051N, -111.233413W)

Size: Up to 5,000 acres total, broken down into daily manageable blocks.
Smoke Impacts: Smoke is expected to travel northeast and could impact the Blue Ridge communities, Winslow, Holbrook, and state Route 87 during the day and may flow to Pine, Strawberry and East Clear Creek Canyon overnight.

 

While conducting these prescribed burn operations portions of the Arizona National Scenic Trail will be closed near the C.C. Cragin Reservoir. Closure will begin on Sept. 24 at mile 486.4 through 490.

 

Prescribed burns are always dependent upon weather and wind conditions, as well as approval from Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). The public can view approved prescribed burns on ADEQ’s website at smoke.azdeq.gov. Coconino National Forest burns begin with the designator “COF.”
