Negligible Growth Observed on Cat Fire

Fredonia, Ariz., Sept. 17, 2018 — For Immediate Release. Favorable weekend weather conditions curtailed fire growth on the Cat Fire.

Crews took advantage of lighter than anticipated winds and higher humidity to focus on reinforcing fireline ahead of the Cat Fire.

Cat Fire Overview:

Date reported: August 6, 2018                                  Cause: Lightning

Size: 4,108 acres                                                               Personnel: 35

Location: The Cat Fire is about 25 miles southeast of Jacob Lake in the Saddle Mountain Wilderness on the North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest.

Fuel: Mixed conifer, ponderosa pine and pinyon-juniper/mountain mahogany.

Weather: Warm and dry conditions with periods of high winds will continue to persist over northern Arizona through Tuesday with high winds and critical fire weather anticipated Wednesday afternoon.

Strategy: The strategy continues as contain and control when and where firefighters have the high probability to successfully do so. Crews will continue to reinforce indirect line, focusing efforts west and south of the Saddle Mountain Wilderness to halt the fire’s progression toward public and private infrastructure and concentrated visitor use areas.

Closures: Fire managers are planning to re-implement area, road, and trail closures. This new closure information will be provided separately upon final approval of the closure order.

Smoke: Smoke will continue to be visible from a wide area around the plateau. Smoke impacts have been minimal thus far but may occasionally effect the communities to the north and the northeast. Motorists are asked to always use caution when driving near or around all fires. For more information on local air quality resources, please visit https://www.airnow.gov/.
