Bald Fire Update:

Williams, Ariz., Aug 07, 2018—For Immediate Release. The Bald Fire located on the south face of Sitgreaves Mountain on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest has grown to 85 acres and continues to meet forest health objectives.

BALD FIRE OVERVIEW

Start Date: July 22, 2018.

Cause: Lightning.

Location: South slope of Sitgreaves Mountain southwest of Spring Valley.

Current Size: Approximately 85 acres.

Resources: 1-Type 3 Engine

Current Status: The Bald Fire is continuing to grow at a moderate pace moving down slope to the southwest with very favorable fire effects. Burning for just over two weeks, the fire is currently backing off the higher terrain with one to two foot flame lengths consuming dead and down fuels scattered across the surface left behind from the 2014 Sitgreaves fire.
Managers will continue to utilize a type 3 helicopter at times to monitor fire behavior from the air. This will help reduce exposure of fire personnel working in steep terrain. Growth is expected to progress as weather conditions permit.

Smoke: Smoke will continue to be highly visible from a wide area around the mountain. Smoke impacts have been minimal thus far but may occasionally effect the communities of Spring Valley, Pittman Valley, Parks, Red Lakes, and the Interstate 40 corridor. Motorists are asked to always use caution when driving near or around all fires.
