Celebrate Arizona’s heritage in the Red Rock Ranger District

SEDONA, Ariz., Feb. 22, 2018, For Immediate Release — The Coconino National Forest is sponsoring events to help celebrate Arizona archaeology and heritage awareness month in March.

The Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino NF has planned events where visitors can learn to make fire with friction and many other interesting facts of life passed down from Arizona’s early Native Americans.

Events are also being planned from numerous agencies throughout Arizona to celebrate its archaeology and heritage. The complete listing of events is on the Arizona State Parks & Trails website at www.azstateparks.gov/archy. Please contact event sponsors to ensure you have the latest information. There are three events sponsored by the Forest Service in Sedona and the Verde Valley area.

First Friday at the Red Rock Ranger Station

When: March 2 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Red Rock Ranger District Visitors Center
8375 state Route 179 Sedona, AZ 86351
Activities: Fire made with friction five different
ways, Southwest American cultures compared to ancient Polynesian cultures and displays.

 

Spring equinox celebration at V Bar V Heritage Site

When: March 20 at 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: V Bar V Heritage Site 6750 N. Forest Ranger Rd Rimrock, AZ 86335
Activities: Presentations by Ken Zoll on the solar calendar, agave roast demonstration and view petroglyphs.

 

V Bar V archaeology discovery days

When: March 24 & 25 at 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: V Bar V Heritage Site 6750 N. Forest Ranger Rd Rimrock, AZ 86335
Activities:
Making fire by friction, throwing darts with atlatls and spinning cotton. Learn about Native American beads, bows and arrows and yucca fiber sandals. Taste roasted agave and learn the uses of this amazing plant. Visit the petroglyph panel and view the ancient scribes in stone.

No pets are allowed on the site.
