KETCHIKAN, Alaska, Nov. 2, 2017 – In observation of Veterans Day, the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center will be closed on Friday, Nov. 10. The center will also be closed for training on Friday, Nov. 17.

The center will be open and free of charge on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Nov 24 through Dec. 15. Visitors can enjoy the exhibits, purchase America the Beautiful passes or Tongass area maps, or choose to screen one of our films highlighting Alaskan natural and cultural history.

With prior arrangement from teachers, classes may visit Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The center will be closed from Dec. 16 to Jan. 4, 2018. From January to April, our hours will be extended from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in order to accommodate our Friday Night Insight programs. On January 6, at 6:00 p.m. we will kick off the series with local artist Ray Troll’s presentation: Prehistoric Alaska. The Friday Night Insight programs include presentations by community experts, scientists, and historians. The Friday Night Insight schedule will be released soon.

The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center is the Tongass National Forest’s interagency visitor center and museum, located at 50 Main Street in the heart of downtown Ketchikan. Working together to interpret the story of the Tongass National Forest, we foster public appreciation for Southeast Alaska’s unique relationship between land and people, while advancing public understanding of the Forest Service’s role in sustaining healthy ecosystems and vibrant communities throughout Southeast Alaska.
