Whale Bay zone on Baranof Island in Unit 4 to open to the harvest of mountain goats

SITKA, Alaska – The Sitka District Ranger, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is opening the Whale Bay zone to the harvest of mountain goats. The opening will be effective at 12:01 a.m., Saturday October 7, 2017 and continue through the remainder of the 2017 season which ends December 31 or until the harvest quota is reached. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has issued a concurrent opening in the same zone. Recent aerial surveys indicate that a harvestable surplus of goats is now available in the area covered by this special action. Biologists have set a harvest quota of four males or one female. This special action is necessary to allow hunters additional opportunity where new information indicates a harvestable surplus is available.

The remainder of Baranof Island will remain open for goat hunting unless closed by past or future special action.

Maps and descriptions of goat management areas are available from the Sitka Ranger District Office and the Sitka area office of ADF&G. Information on Federal subsistence management special actions for the Tongass National Forest can be found at For additional information, call Subsistence Biologist Justin Koller at 907-747-4297 or email him at jpkoller@xxxxxxxxx.
