September Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center updates JUNEAU, Alaska, Sept. 12, 2017–The
US Forest Service will host its annual autumn family fun day on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. The free
Fall Fun Fest coincides with a fee free day at the glacier. Events are scheduled for kindergarten-second graders in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon. Activities focus on 3rd to 5th graders from noon to 2 p.m. “This year is more exciting than ever,” said Bev Levene, organizer and interpretive ranger. “We are introducing
our new Agents of Discovery mobile gaming app for online adventures that kids can access via their own phones or pads.”
Families are encouraged to download the app at home and be ready to activate it at the glacier. Although there
is not public Wi-Fi at the glacier, you can go to your favorite app store ahead of time and download
Agents of Discovery. In the app, select the Mendenhall Mission and bring the device to the Fall Fun Fest. Once the mission is complete, kids will receive an embroidered Junior Ranger patch.
Partners will be helping the Forest Service to create a special day for families:

Juneau Public Library staff will present story time for young children from 10:15 a.m. to11 a.m.

Discovery Southeast, the visitor center’s bookstore operator and long-time Juneau youth education non-profit, will take families on scheduled outdoor adventures at throughout the day.

The Raptor Center will present “Blueberry,” a live raven, to see up close.
·
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will introduce families to wildlife explorations.

Two Tlingit students will be honored at 11 a.m. for their contributions to the new Tongass National Forest Junior Ranger book. They created and donated Alaska Native artwork for the publication.

www.mendenhallglacier.net. Schedule Change The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will closing at 4 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. on Sept 23. The center will
also close at 4 p.m. on Sept. 24, 28, and 29. On these four days, the building will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Visitor Center will be open for the regular summer hours (8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.) the rest of September. Outdoor
areas are open from 6 a.m. to midnight. Sept 30 is also a fee free day.
On Oct. 1, the Visitor Center will switch to winter hours: Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No pass
or entry fee is needed between October and March. For more information, go to the web
