North Zone Pine Hollow Fire update – Aug. 10, 2017
Fredonia, Ariz., Aug. 10, 2017 — For Immediate Release. Operations continued to show positive results today on the lightning-caused
Pine Hollow wildfire. Smoke began to increase significantly yesterday as firefighters conducted ground firing operations along ridgetops south of Forest Road (FR) 3609. Today crews completed aerial ignitions along additional ridgelines within the south-southwest
portion of the 10,295-acre planning area boundary. The aerial firing operations helped crews safely even up the fire’s interior edge and bring fire back around to the west side of FR22. There are several tactical reasons why fire managers designate such a large planning area boundary on a wildfire. “The boundary for the Pine Hollow fire is large, and the main reason for this
is so crews can use existing roads and trails so that we limit ground disturbance,” said North Zone Fire Management Officer Ed Hiatt.
When fire managers are determining boundaries, Hiatt explained that they are also looking for areas with the highest possibility of success. “That success being that we are able to safely hold
fire within the area using features like roads, trails, areas with little or no fuels or areas with recent burn history. A large planning area provides us with the decision space to adjust plans, to safely work along boundaries and perform actions on our terms
instead of being reactive.” Name: Pine Hollow Wildfire Started: Wednesday, July 19, 2017
Cause: Lightning Location: The fire is west of Big Springs Field Station in the vicinity of Little Mountain on the North Kaibab Ranger District of the
Kaibab National Forest. Size: Approximately 4,638 acres Planning Area Boundary: 10,295 acres Fuels: The wildfire is burning in ponderosa pine fuel type and debris left from the Pipeline Fire of 2009 Resources: 1 Type-4 Incident Commander, 2 Type-3 engines, 3 Type-6 engines, 1 fuels crew, 1 patrol and 1 Helitack crew Safety: Motorists are asked to drive with extreme caution when in the vicinity of Little Mountain and especially on FR22 as both fire
traffic and road construction is present of FR22. Weather Forecast: The fire received significant moisture last week, and as a result rain showers moderated fire behavior resulting in
little growth. More is expected over the next several days as monsoon moisture is forecasted to spread back across Arizona, bringing an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday. Additional moisture is forecasted to remain over
the region with scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms on Sunday through Tuesday with temperatures slightly below normal. Expected Actions: Continue monitoring fire behavior. Additional fire activity updates may be obtained through the following sources:
