Geophysicist Elena Suleimani talks tsunamis at the Discovery Center KETCHIKAN, Alaska, May 4, 2017–
Geophysicist Elena Suleimani, Ph.D. will give a lecture on tsunamis in Alaska and around the world on May 9, 2017. The program will begin at 6 p.m. inside the Elizabeth Peratrovich Theater of the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. It will also be live broadcast
via Facebook at www.facebook.com/TongassNF. “Alaska is the biggest tsunami ‘producer’ in the US,” says Suleimani. “Tsunamis, generated in Alaska, could reach
our coastal communities within minutes of an earthquake.” Suleimani will cover community preparation, and its vital role in reducing property damage and loss of life, as
well as how the two shocking tsunami disasters of the 21st century have forever changed the definition of the word "tsunami". Elena Suleimani holds a B.S. Degree in Radiophysics and Electronics from the Gorky State University, Russia, a
M.S. degree in Physical Oceanography from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She has studied nonlinear dynamics of tsunami waves at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of
Sciences, and later numerical modeling of tsunami waves at the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Elena is currently at the Geophysical Institute in Fairbanks and is working on tsunami inundation mapping for Alaska coastal
communities. For more information contact Paul Robbins Jr. at, 907-228-6201 or
