Alaska transfer final Fireside Lecture of 2017
JUNEAU, Alaska, March 20, 2017–The final Fireside Lecture of 2017, March 24, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the
transfer of Alaska to the United States from Russia. Architect and historian Wayne Jensen will present a program at Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center about the American Secretary of State William Henry Seward, whose efforts in 1867 resulted in the successful
transfer. “Seward visited Alaska in 1869 following his service as Secretary of State,” wrote Jensen. “He traveled the Inside Passage as one of the first tourists to Southeast Alaska. He spent time
in Sitka and Klukwan on the Chilkat River, as well as Wrangell before returning to San Francisco.” Seward served in President Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet. He was attacked and injured in his Washington, D.C. home the same night Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Fireside Lectures are hosted by the U.S. Forest Service. They are free and occur on Friday nights from January–March 24 at 6:30 p.m. and repeat at 8 p.m. Two recent lectures have been broadcast
live via FaceBook. To see the March 10 and 17 recorded lectures, search our Facebook page:
