Governor’s Humanities Award recipient Lende to be Fireside speaker

JUNEAU, Alaska, Feb. 6, 2017 – Heather Lende, Haines writer and recipient of a 2017 Governor’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Humanities, is the Fireside Lecturer on Friday, Feb. 10 at Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

Lende is known for personal portraits of her neighbors and heartwarming reports of events in small-town Alaska. Lende started as an obituary writer for the Chilkat Valley News and went on to be a contributor to the New York Times, National Geographic Traveler, Woman’s Day, National Public Radio, and Alaska Dispatch News.

Lende also wrote three books that delve into the lives of Southeast Alaskans: If You Lived Here, I’d Know Your Name, Take Good Care of the Garden and the Dogs, and Find the Good. For the lecture she will be reading one of her favorite essays on life, love, loss and ice skating, titled “Fire and Ice,” as well as excerpts from Find the Good.

“I believe gratitude comes from a place in your soul that knows the story could have ended differently, and often does,” Lende wrote in her latest book. “And I also know that gratitude is at the heart of finding the good in the world.”

Fireside Lectures are free and occur Friday nights at 6:30 p.m. and repeat at 8 p.m. at the U.S. Forest Service’s Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. Winter hours for the Center are Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Elevators are not operational due to construction. Access is via outdoor ramp or stairs.
