Ice Safety and Workshop and Rescue Demonstration at Mendenhall Glacier
Juneau, Alaska, Jan 3, 2017–The Forest Service and Capital City Fire and Rescue (CCFR) are teaming up to provide free winter safety
education for icy water immersion on Saturday, January 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
“In winter people hike across frozen lakes and ponds. They need to be prepared to rescue themselves, their pets and bystanders if they fall through the ice,” said Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Lead Naturalist
Laurie Craig. “We are grateful to Juneau’s rescue professionals for teaching us the best ways to survive.” Members of the rope and water rescue teams from Capital City Fire and Rescue will conduct a workshop in the visitor center auditorium followed by an outdoor demonstration of several incident scenarios and
rescue techniques. Understanding hypothermia and how to combat its effects will be included in the workshop and demonstration. CCFR team members will cut a hole in the kettle pond ice near the visitor center where people can
watch the demonstration and listen from a safe distance. “This event is one of the most important public services we host at the visitor center,” said Craig. “We urge everyone to attend this free session on Saturday afternoon.” For more information call Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center at 907 789-0097. -USDA- This electronic message contains information generated by the USDA solely for the intended recipients.
