Forest Service participates in Rainforest Festival Petersburg, Alaska, Sept 6, 2016 – The ninth annual
Rainforest Festival takes place September 8 through 11
at various locations in Petersburg.
The Rainforest Festival is a non-profit event whose goal is to bring participants closer to the natural world through education, exploration and the arts. Tongass National Forest Ecologist Karen Dillman and Petersburg Ranger District Botanist Joni Johnson present: ·
A brown bag lunch talk:
Eat, Heal, or Dye: Botanical Secrets from the Tongass on Thursday from 12:05 to 12:55 at the Public Library Community Room. ·
Sandy Beach Bioblitz: Identify all plant life above high
tide line on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until noon at the Sandy Beach Park Shelter #1. Free t-shirts for first 25 participants (sizes limited). ·
Papermaking with Invasive Plants: Saturday from 1:00 p.m.
to 3 p.m. at the Public Library ·
Explorations of Color and Natural Dyes: Saturday from
2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Community Garden behind elementary school. This is a teen event for ages 13 to 18 years.

Fall Flora and Fungi of Crystal Mountain: field trip on
Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Kids 12 and up are welcome. Meet at the intersection of Woodpecker Cove Rd and Mitkof Hwy. Bring water, food, survival gear, and proper boots.
Preregister to
Make Paper with Invasive Plants with Petersburg Botanist Joni Johnson at the Public Library. Petersburg Ranger District’s Biological Technician Eric Castro will assist kids with making fish print t-shirts. Bring your own t-shirt or other printable cloth
