Fuller Fire Update: Benefits of the Fuller Fire Fuel Breaks

Tuesday August 2, 2016

Completion: 47%

Acres: 14,541
Start Date: June 29, 2016
Cause: Lightning
Location: Point Imperial, N. Rim Grand Canyon NP
Total Personnel: 216
Fuels/Topography: Timber, grass, rugged terrain

Crews will continue mitigation work along FSR 219. Firefighters have had much success creating fuel breaks off the FSR 610 and FSR 611 creating a buffer for fire movement in this densely forested, overgrown area.

“Benefits from the Fuller Fire include the opportunity for the fuel breaks along FSR 610, 611 and 219,” said Garry Domis, Kaibab NF Silviculturist, serving as Resource Advisor for the fire. “These fuel breaks open and encourage the growth of Aspen and Ponderosa Pine which are highly fire resistant. The eventual growth of fire resistant trees will act as protection for other areas of the forest. They will also improve wildlife habitat such as grouse.”

Precipitation is expected throughout the rest of the week; with localized flooding possible.

We anticipate several road and trail closures to be lifted soon. We will post changes to our Facebook page and Inciweb as soon as we receive notification. Check with the National Park Service at http://www.nps.gov/grca and Kaibab National Forest at http://www.fs.usda.gov/kaibab for more information.
