Lightning-caused Coco Fire increases to 300 acres

Tusayan, Ariz., July 27, 2016—For Immediate Release. The lightning-caused Coco Fire on the Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest has grown to 300 acres in size while reducing hazardous fuel accumulations and restoring overall forest health.

Fire crews continue preparation work ahead of the main wildfire along 2 miles of the Arizona Trail between forest roads 303 and 2719. Ignitions are also occurring to the southwest of the fire near the intersection of forest roads 302 and 303 in order to ensure it remains within predetermined control lines.

The Arizona Trail remains open to hikers. However, visitors should be aware that some smoke may be present in the area. As this lightning-caused fire continues to move in a natural setting in order to reduce hazardous fuels and enhance forest health, it is likely that smoke will become more visible from Highway 64, Grand Canyon National Park’s East Rim Drive, and other populated areas. Warmer, drier weather in the forecast will lead to the potential for increased wildfire activity and growth in the coming days.
