Rains over fire area; internal smoldering continues

Completion: 65%

Acres: 14, 385

Start Date: June 29, 2016

Cause: Lightning

Location: Point Imperial, N. Rim Grand Canyon NP

Total Personnel: 403

Yesterday:  Over an inch of rain fell across the majority of the fire Friday afternoon. However, fire managers continued to actively monitor internal smoldering to the north and west of the fire. Crews worked to remove hazards along Cape Royal and Point Imperial Roads in anticipation of opening the roads to the public as soon as it is safe to do so.

Today: Drier conditions may increase smoldering and natural fire spread to the west and north as ecological benefits continue. Crews will be working to remove remaining safety hazards along Cape Royal and Point Imperial Roads. Management of the Fuller Fire will be transferred tomorrow at 6 a.m. from the Southwest Area  Type 2 Incident Management Team 3, to a Type 3 Incident Management Team for long-term fire management.

“Our Team was honored to assist fire managers with the Fuller Fire. We have set the incoming team up for success with long term strategies” said Incident Commander, Alan Sinclair. “I feel confident that the type 3 organization will provide continuity of management objectives of this wildfire.”
