FS seeks proposals to enhance Prince of Wales Island forestlands

Ketchikan, Alaska, June 3, 2016 – The Prince of Wales Island Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) is seeking applications for projects aimed to enhance public or private lands on the island. The committee could have nearly $500,000 to spend on projects this year. The funding is made available to Prince of Wales Island through the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.

The RAC works closely with the Forest Service to recommend projects to benefit a variety resources, including fish, wildlife, soils and watersheds; road and trail maintenance; and invasive plant management.

“Projects can be completed by Forest Service personnel, through partnership agreements or by open-bid contracting with individuals and corporations,” said Craig and Thorne Bay District Ranger Matt Anderson.

RAC project proposal forms and instructions are available at both the Craig and Thorne Bay Ranger District offices. Those interested in submitting a project can do so online at http://cloudapps-usda-gov.force.com/FSSRS/CreateNewprojectpage. The RAC will begin reviewing projects for potential funding during its meeting set for 10 a.m., June 20, at the Craig Ranger District.

Projects should be submitted by June 15. For more information, call Ranger Anderson or Rebecca Sakraida, committee coordinator, at 907-826-1616. Members of the public are welcome to attend RAC meetings.
