Yakutat Youth Community Corps Project receives grant Yakutat, Alaska, May 23, 2016–The Yakutat Ranger District (YRD) and City and Borough of Yakutat recently employed a 9-person AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) youth crew in a program called the Yakutat Youth Community
Corps Project. This project received a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation 21st Century Conservation Service Corps Initiative grant for $50,000. "This project benefits the Yakutat Community by treating invasive plants along the Yakutat forelands, maintaining trails, repairing damaged fish and wildlife habitat, cleaning up marine debris and trash from shorelines and waterways, and
educating the local community about the restoration work," said Resource Assistant Teresa Swanson.
Partners include the U.S. Forest Service, City of Yakutat, Yakutat Tlingit Tribe, State of Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Yakutat School District, and the Rasmuson Foundation. This project is a new and exciting partnership through
which all involved anticipate benefiting. "Crewmembers participate in meaningful hands-on conservation projects by creating a healthy environment and learning essential skills that foster careers in natural resources within a remote and unique Alaskan landscape," added Swanson.
AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps is a full-time, team-based residential service program for individuals ages 18-24. The outcome of the project is to create a valuable opportunity in the Yakutat community, and nationally, to educate about natural resource employment In SE Alaska and beyond.
