Tongass National Forest youth fishing events

 

CRAIG, Alaska, May 17, 2016–The Tongass National Forest, partner agencies, groups, businesses, and local volunteers are sponsoring youth fishing events throughout Southeast Alaska. No experience is needed to participate in these events. It is a great way for children to learn how to fish or practice their fishing skills. Event planners will provide a wealth of experience and knowledge to help the beginning angler get started. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and all persons should bring proper footwear and clothing.

 

The Craig and Thorne Bay Ranger Districts will celebrate the Prince of Wales Island Jim Beard Memorial Kids Fishing Day at Gravely Creek in Thorne Bay on a June 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local kids will learn about fish and their habitat while having a good time. Bring fishing gear and a T-shirt to print a fish on. For more information, contact Brandy Prefontaine at 907-828-3217.

 

The Juneau Ranger District’s annual co-hosted Family Fishing Day is located at Twin Lakes in Juneau, Alaska, on June 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Partners are the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Juneau Rotary Club, and Douglas Island Pink and Chum Inc. (DIPAC). King salmon will be stocked by DIPAC. Activities include fishing, boating, and fish printing. All ages are invited. For more information, contact Barbara Adams at 907-789-6252.

 

The Hoonah Ranger District’s annual Kids Fishing Derby is at Icy Strait Point on June 4 from 11a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The week-long event for ages 4-18 includes a casting contest, spawning fun run and ends with a salt-water beachside fishing derby in cooperation with Icy Strait Point. The Ketchikan-Misty Fiords Ranger District’s annual Kids Fishing Derby is located at City Park (Park Avenue and Fair Street) on June 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. Kids ages 3-15 may fish for salmon in the City Park while participating in numerous education activities from fish painting to fishing ethics. The Petersburg Ranger District’s Kake Kids Fishing Derby is June 18, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Events include environmental education and kids fishing derby. For more information, contact Eric Johnson at 907-772-5969.

 

The Sitka Ranger District’s annual Kids Fishing Day is located at Swan Lake picnic area on June 11 starting at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information, call Joe Serio at 907-747-6671.

 

The Wrangell Ranger District is a partner in the Pat’s Lake Trout Adventure on June 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Special youth fishing regulations, T-shirt fish printing and lure making, are offered. For more information, call Corree Seward Delabrue at 907-874-7550.

 

The Yakutat Ranger District Family Fishing Day is located at the Yakutat Small Boat Harbor on June 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kids get an introduction to sport fishing, marine fish species, catch and release, conservation, and safety around the water. The event is completely integrated into the community with in-kind participation by a host of partners including the Yakutat City and Borough, ADF&G Sport Fish, Park Service, Yakutat Police, State Troopers, and several local businesses.
