Ketchikan High School Youth Advisory Council KETCHIKAN, Alaska–A mixture of juniors and seniors form the Youth Advisory Council, or Y.A.C. The group held their first 2015
fall meeting at Ketchikan High School with U.S. Forest Service specialists working on the amendment to the
2008 Tongass Land and Resource Management Plan.
Y.A.C. members are selected by the junior-senior advisor based on academic excellence and interest in science and humanities.
The team has a busy fall ahead of them, including reviewing and making recommendations regarding the amendment, which will help guide the Tongass transition to a predominately young growth timber management program. Three Y.A.C. meetings were held at Ketchikan High School from the fall of 2014 through the spring of 2015. The Y.A.C. members
participated in discussions about the emphases of the forest plan amendment and attended a fact-gathering open house. Each year, new juniors, and returning seniors will form an active council; learn about the timelines and scope of forest planning; and how
they can participate in the effort. For more information, contact Tongass National Forest Interpretation and Conservation Education Program Manager Faith L. Duncan
