Tongass National Forest August 17, 2015 Mendenhall Prospectus Open House JUNEAU, Alaska – Tourism businesses submitting proposals to provide commercial recreation services at the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, or MGRA, are invited to attend an open house meeting from 5 to 8 p.m., Aug. 21, at the Juneau
Ranger District office conference room, 8510 Mendenhall Loop Road (near the Weather Service office). “Let us help answer questions about the prospectus process during this time when you are preparing a bid package,” said Jennifer Berger, special uses supervisor for the Juneau Ranger District. The Forest Service issued a prospectus for outfitter, guide and transport services for the MGRA July 15, 2015 and is inviting proposals from interested tourism businesses who want to provide commercial recreation services to the visiting
public. The competitive process will result in the division of nearly 239,000 service days amongst tourism businesses. Each service day represents a client participating in an activity, such as hiking, kayaking, or riding a bus.
This is the first prospectus opportunity for MGRA in 19 years. In that time, the number of visitors to Juneau has increased substantially and visitors have increasingly looked for guided services or commercial transport to help them experience
the MGRA. Commercial Outfitters and Guides interested in offering services in the MGRA over the next five years should apply now. This includes taxi drivers, bus operators, guide companies, kayak rental companies, and companies who want to offer
canoe rides, hikes, bike rides and walks around the MGRA. The prospectus is open for bids from commercial guides and transporters until Sept. 15, 2015.
