Managed fires update:
Burnout operations continue this evening along Highways 87, and today along Forest Highway 3

Flagstaff, Ariz., June 22, 2015, For Immediate Release — Fire managers on the Horse Tank Fire will be conducting burnout operations along Highway 87 starting around sundown this evening and continuing until late in the evening as conditions continue to meet objectives. The cooler temperatures and higher humidity will help maintain a low severity burn.  Expect smoke along Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) as burnout operations are conducted mid-day today between FH 3 and FR 124C on the Camillo Fire. Nighttime burnout operations will also continue on both fires over the next several days.

Motorists are urged to drive with care and expect delays. Smoke will reduce visibility and fire crews will be working alongside the roads. Fire personnel and Arizona Department of Transportation will be in the area to help direct traffic.

CAMILLO FIRE OVERVIEW
Yesterday:
Crews prepared perimeters for low severity burnout operations along KV power lines and roads including Forest Highway 3.  A helicopter conducted aerial interior ignitions mid-day to ignite interior pockets of fuels, creating a more continuous burn area. In the evening personnel used hand ignitions to create a low severity burn along interior roads.

Today: Ignitions will occur between FR 124C and Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) mid-day creating a solid perimeter along on the eastern side of FH 3.

Smoke: The majority of smoke will disperse to the northeast. Smoke is noticeable from many areas on the Lake Mary Road corridor (Forest Highway 3) and portions of Flagstaff. Smoke will be the densest in early morning and late in the evening, motorists are urged to drive with caution.

Closures: Lands, roads, and trails in the vicinity of Little Mormon Mountain. This includes Forest Roads 92, 124, and a portion of 82. The area on the south side of FR 125 will be closed, but lands north of the road as well as FR 125 itself will remain open with access to Kinnikinick Lake. The Gooseberry Springs Trailhead and a portion of the Arizona Trail are also closed. See the full closure order and map on Inciweb. Delays are possible along FR 125 and FH 3 because of fire personnel, smoke and equipment in the area.

Current Size: 11,581 acres (planning area is approximately 46,000 acres)

Start Date: June 14, 2015

Location: 20 miles south of Flagstaff, just southeast of Mormon Lake.

HORSE TANK FIRE OVERVIEW
Yesterday:
Fire burned interior pockets and crews conducted burnout operations along Highway 260 towards Highway 87 late into the evening to solidify perimeters.

Today:  Preparation for tonight’s ignitions along Highway 87 continues throughout the day. Crews plan to burn along Highway 87 moving westward this evening, as conditions for burnout operations continue to meet objectives.

Smoke: Visible from Highways 260 and 87, I-17, Payson, Pine, Strawberry, Blue Ridge and the Verde Valley. There may be an increase in smoke this evening along Highway 87.

Closures: Forest Roads 9366R, 9384A, 9381, 609, a portion of 9361A, 9367R, 608, 607, and 607A are closed to all entry.

Current Size: 2,450 acres (planning area is approximately 5,000 acres)

Start Date: June 6, 2015

Location: Six miles north of Strawberry, south of Highway 260 near the junction with Hwy 87

The Horse Tank and Camillo fires are fulfilling their natural and crucial role in the ecosystem. The forest needs frequent, low severity fire to restore wildlife habitat, promote healthy vegetation, reduce fuels and the risk of severe fire, and create safer conditions for residents, visitors, and firefighters.
