Lightning Ignites Two Wildfires on Chugach National Forest
Anchorage- Two wildfires were reported Tuesday, June 16, on the Chugach National
Forest – Kenai Peninsula following dry lightning strikes.
312 Juneau Lake Fire
·
Located east of Juneau Lake and north of Cooper Landing between the Juneau and Romig Forest Service cabins
·
The fire is estimated at 100 acres
·
Burning in spruce, hemlock and open tundra
·
A Type 3 incident command team has been ordered
·
Bean Creek Trail and the Resurrection Pass South Trail from the trailhead to the Devil’s Creek junction is closed. Trout Lake, Romig, Juneau and Swan Lake cabins are closed to
public use
·
The forest incident commander and fuels crew are on the fire today, as well as a support and monitoring team from the Seward District
306 Stetson Creek Fire
·
Located south of the Sterling Highway between Russian River and Cooper Creek
·
The size is estimated at 200-300 acres
·
USFS staff initial attack crew and volunteer fire departments from Moose Pass and Cooper Landing responded to the fire
·
A Type 2 Team has been ordered to assist in managing the fire
·
Fire aircraft is being utilized to suppress both fires
·
The Stetson Creek Trail has been closed
·
All campers have vacated Cooper Creek North and South Campgrounds
Both fires are being suppressed. There may be smoke in the vicinity and smoke may impact visibility in the air and on the ground. Public and firefighting safety is our first priority. Please use caution when
traveling in the area and stay informed.
Weather conditions are predicted to be warm and dry for the next seven days, so exercise caution in the outdoors and report any fires or smoke. There are Stage 1 fire restrictions in place across Chugach National
Forest land on the Kenai Peninsula. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire is prohibited, EXCEPT in a developed camp or picnic area. In addition smoking, EXCEPT within an enclosed vehicle or building, and developed campground
