Upcoming road construction within the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project

Flagstaff, Ariz., May 11, 2015, For Immediate Release — Contractors will soon begin road work on Elden Lookout Road (Forest Road 557) within the Dry Lake Hills portion of the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project (FWPP). The resurfacing work is anticipated to begin May 18 and could last into the summer, as conditions allow.

Elden Lookout Road is currently open to the public but will be closed once resurfacing work begins, and will remain closed until the work is completed. Recreationists should be aware that heavy equipment will be in the area during this time. Related construction traffic will also affect Elden Springs Road (FR 556) and Schultz Pass Road (FR 420), as material for the resurfacing will be hauled from McCormick Pit in the Cinder Hills area to Elden Lookout Road.

Similar to what was done on Schultz Pass Road in October 2013, resurfacing will improve Elden Lookout Road so it is capable of sustaining logging traffic for FWPP. This effort will also result in better driving conditions for the public and recreationists. A final decision for FWPP is anticipated in September 2015; logging activity for the project could begin as early as next year.

The partners of the FWPP will be continuing to move forward with planning and implementing treatments to reduce the risk of severe fire and flooding in the Rio De Flag and Lake Mary watersheds. Some projects that fall within the FWPP geographical boundary, like the Orion Task Order, were approved under previous environmental analyses and are ready for implementation. The majority of the project area, however, is currently being analyzed under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Visit www.flagstaffwatershedprotection.org for additional information on FWPP. For more information about 4FRI, please visit http://www.fs.usda.gov/4fri.
