FS updates reservation, payment process for Auk Village, Mendenhall Lake Campgrounds

JUNEAU, Alaska–The U.S. Forest Service has revised the reservation and payment process for Auk Village and Mendenhall Lake Campgrounds.

In 2015, all campsites need to be reserved and paid for through the Recreation.gov website at www.recreation.gov or by or calling 1-877-444-6777. The TDD number is 1-877-833-6777. The international call number is 1-518-885-3639.

Campground reservations may be made the same day, if a site is available, or up to six months in advance. The cumulative maximum stay at these campgrounds is 14 days a year. Recreation.gov accepts credit or debit cards for payment. Cash, checks, or any other form of payment will no longer be accepted at the campgrounds or at the Juneau Ranger District office.

The Forest Service is making these changes to simplify the reservation process for patrons and to reduce the administrative costs of collecting, securing, recording, depositing and auditing cash payments. For the service, Recreation.gov charges a $9 fee per on-line reservation, or a $10 fee for phone reservations.

Auke Village Recreation Area’s main shelter and Skater’s Cabin day-use sites will also convert to the Recreation.gov system soon. When the conversion is complete, the Forest Service will notify the public through Alaska media outlets.

Recreation.gov is the one-stop resource for trip planning, information, and reservations at 90,000 sites on public lands, including national parks and forests, wildlife refuges, waterways, and recreation areas.

For more information, call the Juneau Ranger District at 907-586-8800.
