Tongass Advisory Committee Changes February Meeting Location

JUNEAU, Alaska–The location for the sixth meeting of the Tongass Advisory Committee, set for Feb. 17-19, has been changed from Petersburg to Juneau. The Juneau meeting will be held at the Extended Stay America Hotel, 1800 Shell Simmons Drive.

The February meeting was originally slated for Petersburg, but was moved to Juneau in order to provide more meeting time and allow participation by a full quorum of TAC members. While the committee regrets that it will not have the ability to visit Petersburg as originally planned, the TAC encourages community members and other members of the public to participate through the public comment process.

“The committee’s interest in meeting in the communities of Southeast has not changed,” said Tongass Deputy Forest Supervisor Jay Anderson, who is also the TAC’s designated federal official. “And, each member has personal commitments outside their volunteerism on this committee. This change of location ensures the greatest amount of member attendance possible at a critical time in their deliberations.”

The Committee is being asked to make recommendations on forest management on the Tongass with emphasis on young-growth management; these recommendations may be included in the Forest Plan amendment.

TAC members advise and give recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture through the Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. The membership represents a broad and diverse range of viewpoints and expertise, geographically diverse communities in and outside of Alaska, and people with a demonstrated commitment to working on collaborative solutions.

A Federal Register notice will be published soon to officially affirm the change in location.
