Manti-La Sal Gets New Supervisor

Mark Pentecost will lead the Manti-La Sal National Forest as its Supervisor beginning Oct. 20.  Pentecost comes to the Manti-La Sal from a position as District Ranger on the Kawishiwi Ranger District, Superior National Forest in Ely, MN.

Prior to working for the Forest Service, Pentecost was the Deputy Director of the Georgia Land Trust, Inc./Alabama Land Trust, Inc. and his primary duties involved land protection and land stewardship programs. He served in the U.S. Army as an Infantry officer, where he commanded the 1st Ranger Battalion in Savannah, GA and 5th Ranger Training Battalion in Dahlonega, GA.

"His previous background and experience as a district ranger on the Superior National Forest and his previous work for a land trust and in the Army will give him an experienced perspective to lead the Manti-La Sal National Forest" said Regional Forester Nora Rasure.

Pentecost steps into the position following Allen Rowley, who has been acting Forest Supervisor for the Manti-La Sal, while working as Forest Supervisor for the Fishlake National Forest. Rowley’s work focused on determining how the two forests could cut costs by collaborating. Several work groups, such as fire, fleet and road maintenance now share employees. The Intermountain Region considered merging the Manti-La Sal and Fishlake, but concluded a merger would not result in the efficiencies it expected.

The Manti-La Sal National Forest is made up of five districts: the Sanpete District, Ephraim, UT; the Ferron/Price Districts, Ferron, UT; and the Moab/Monticello Districts, Moab and Monticello, UT. The Districts and District rangers are under the overall direction of the Forest Supervisor. Within the Supervisor’s office, the staff coordinates activities among Districts, allocates the budget and provides technical support to each District.  Forest Supervisors report to Regional Foresters.
