Managed Fires Near Tusayan Slow Due To Rain

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – The two fires being managed to achieve resource objectives southeast of Tusayan, Ariz., received rain yesterday slowing their growth temporarily.

The 5,071-acre McRae Fire didn’t expand yesterday but continued creeping and smoldering within the fire area. Fire managers are hopeful that drier conditions this week will allow the McRae Fire to continue to grow and benefit the forest by reducing hazardous fuels and improving wildlife habitat.

The Hammer Fire received light, scattered rain showers yesterday, but some areas within the predetermined boundaries for the fire remained dry, allowing for limited growth. The Hammer Fire has now treated 799 acres, and fire managers expect that predicted drier conditions this week will allow for considerable fire growth through the ponderosa pine forest.

On the Williams Ranger District, the 4,150-acre Sitgreaves Complex remains dormant due to several days of precipitation. Some smoke is still visible on the fire, leading fire managers to believe that resurgence is possible when conditions dry out. In the meantime, crews will continue monitoring the fire. This will be the final update on the Sitgreaves Complex until fire activity increases.
