Voices of the Wilderness traveling art exhibit opens in Juneau Alaskan wilderness is showcased in the
Voices of the Wilderness traveling art exhibit at The Canvas Gallery (Seward Street in downtown Juneau) from June 6 through June 27, 2014. The exhibit travels around Alaska through January 2015. The show has already been exhibited in Sitka and Ketchikan,
and after Juneau, will travel to four other Alaskan cities: Fairbanks, Homer, Kenai, and Anchorage.
The exhibit displays artwork inspired by 20 different Alaskan wilderness areas, including pieces from the
nearby Tracy Arm-Ford’s Terror Wilderness and Admiralty National Monument. Artists used a variety of media and first hand experiences in Alaska wilderness for their artwork. Many of the artists participated in the Voices of the Wilderness Artist-in-Residency
Program—spending up to two weeks participating in stewardship duties, such as pulling invasive weeds, helping with wildlife research, cleaning up garbage and marine debris, and monitoring air quality.
The exhibit is sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service to honor the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. The Voices of the Wilderness traveling art exhibit is made possible with funding by Rasmuson Foundation through the Harper Arts Touring Fund, and is administered, under contract, by the Alaska
State Council on the Arts. Throughout 2014, the Forest Service is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Wilderness Act. The
Tongass National Forest protects 5.8 million acres of wilderness in 19 congressionally designated areas, making up one-third of all Tongass lands. The Chugach National Forest manages the congressionally designated Nellie Juan-College Fiord Wilderness Study
Area which encompasses over one-third of that forest. Find out more about Wilderness 50th events, celebrating 50 years of American Wilderness at
