Fall Equinox at V Bar V Heritage Site
Sedona, Ariz. – The Coconino National Forest Red Rock District invites the public to visit the V Bar V Heritage Site Sunday, September 22, at 1 p.m. to hear guest speaker Ken Zoll discuss the solar calendar aspect of the sites petroglyphs. Zoll is a researcher of ancient astronomical practices on the Coconino National Forest and is the author of Sinagua Sunwatchers. His discussion will focus on the possible significance of the solar calendar aspect to the site’s petroglyphs and to the people who made them. Copies of Ken Zoll’s revised and updated book will be for sale at the site through the Arizona Natural History Association. If unable to attend the talk on Sunday, a similar solar calendar effect will be visible at the site on September 21 or 23 around 1:30 p.m. Volunteer guides will be at the site to tell visitors what is known and not known about the people who made these petroglyphs. V Bar V is the largest known petroglyph site in the Verde Valley, as well as one of the best preserved. Acquired by the Coconino National Forest in 1994, the site is protected and kept open to the visiting public for their enjoyment and for the opportunity to learn more about local cultural heritage. V Bar V Heritage Site is open Friday through Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The site is located on Forest Road 618, 2.8 miles southeast of exit 298 on I-17, just beyond the Beaver Creek Campground. Visitors pay a $5 per vehicle fee at the site or can use their Red Rock Pass or Federal Interagency (annual, senior, or access) Pass.
