Kaibab National Forest To Host Open House about Tusayan Flood Reduction Project

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – The Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest is preparing an environmental assessment to analyze the construction of up to eight detention basins on National Forest land in order to reduce flooding in the Town of Tusayan.  The public is invited to an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Tusayan Ranger District office, which is located at 176 Lincoln Log Loop, Grand Canyon.

The open house will provide an opportunity for Tusayan area residents and members of the public to learn more about the proposed project, ask questions and provide comments.

The primary purpose of the proposed project is to reduce the amount of floodwaters entering the Town of Tusayan, the downstream South Grand Canyon Sanitary District water treatment plant, and the Coconino Wash on the Tusayan Ranger District.

“This is a great project for the protection of Tusayan, and the Forest Service is excited to be a part of making Tusayan a safer place to live and visit,” said Tusayan District Ranger Nick Larson.

The open house is part of the scoping process to gather public opinion on the proposed project.  The 30-day scoping period ends Nov. 26.

For additional information, please contact the Tusayan Ranger District at (928) 638-2443.
